Why English backlinks do not rank you in Chile

We audit Chilean sites every quarter that look strong on paper. Hundreds of referring domains, average DR in the 40s, clean anchor text. Then we filter to links from English pages and the picture changes. Rankings for Chilean commercial terms stall, Search Console shows impressions mostly on brand, and competitors with half the domain rating outrank them on local queries. English backlinks are not useless globally, but they rarely rank you in Chile on their own.
Chilean SERPs are locally weighted
Search a high-intent phrase like "software contable para pymes" from Santiago with a Chilean IP or Search Console country filter. You will see .cl domains, Chilean comparison sites, local SaaS brands, and Spanish-language content written for Chilean tax rules. English results appear for some informational queries, but money terms skew local. Google's ranking systems use language, location, and entity signals together. An English link on a US blog sends a weak relevance signal for a Chilean service page targeting Google.cl.
Hreflang and ccTLDs help Google map the right URL to the right country, but they do not replace local citations. If your Chilean landing page has hreflang set correctly yet your link graph is 80% English, you are asking Google to trust global authority where local proof is what the SERP already shows.
Language mismatch on the linking page
Links pass context through the surrounding text, anchor, and page topic. An English paragraph that mentions your brand in passing does not associate you with "arriendos en Las Condes" or "exportación de vino." Chilean Spanish carries local terminology, legal references, and buyer expectations English copy cannot mirror. Even a translated guest post on a Chilean domain often underperforms a native draft because phrasing sounds imported.
Where English links still help (and where they do not)
- Helpful: global SaaS reviews, international press, English Wikipedia or industry bodies with real editorial standards
- Neutral: English pages on multinational sites that also have strong Chilean sections
- Weak for Chilean rankings: generic guest posts on US marketing blogs, Fiverr packages, AI-generated "contributor" posts
- Misleading: high DR English domains that rank in the US but have zero Chilean organic traffic
If your product sells only in Chile, English links should be a small slice of a Chile-focused plan, not the foundation. If you are a global brand with a Chile subsite, English corporate links can support entity recognition, but you still need Chilean editorial links pointing to Chilean URLs.
The fake local shortcut
Some vendors sell English articles on .cl domains, or Spanish translations of English drafts with Chile slapped into the headline. The TLD looks local. The content is not. Editors who care about their audience reject these quickly. The ones who accept everything are often the same sites you should avoid anyway. You end up with a geographically cosmetically correct link that behaves like an English link in relevance terms.
You can spot these quickly in Ahrefs: linking page language is English, author bios link to US SEO agencies, and the site's top organic keywords are US or global terms. The Chilean landing page you care about never appears in that site's crawl footprint. That mismatch is the whole problem in one row.
What to build instead
Rebuild around Chilean publishers your buyers already read: business media, vertical trade press, regional news where the story fits, and specialist blogs in your category. Formats that work include Chilean guest posting with native copy, niche edits on existing Chilean resources, and digital PR when you have a data angle or expert quote local journalists want.
- Split your link targets: Chilean money pages get Chilean links first
- Set language and country filters when prospecting in Ahrefs
- Track Chile-specific rankings, not global averages on English head terms
- Replace low-fit English guest posts with one strong Chilean trade piece per month
Honest expectations
Switching budget from English networks to Chilean editorial is slower upfront. Outreach takes longer, editors ask harder questions, and per-link cost is often higher than a US blog farm. Rankings movement for Chilean queries is also more durable because competitors cannot copy-paste the same inventory. You are trading cheap volume for relevance.
Case patterns we see in audits
Imported SaaS brands often launch in Chile with a strong English product blog and a thin Chilean landing page. Links point to English feature announcements while the pricing page in Chilean Spanish has almost nothing local. Rankings follow the link graph. Competitors with weaker global metrics but solid Chilean media mentions win on "precio," "implementación," and support queries. Local ecommerce brands make the opposite mistake less often because their teams already think in .cl publishers, but they still buy cheap English packages when an agency resells global inventory without labeling it.
When to keep investing in English links
Keep English link building if you sell globally and Chile is one region among many, if your Chilean site is a mirror with hreflang and you still need parent-domain authority, or if you pursue English-language queries inside Chile (expat services, international schools, B2B export). Even then, add Chilean links in parallel rather than treating English placements as a substitute for local editorial work.
How to measure the shift from English to Chilean links
Start with a baseline export from Ahrefs or Semrush filtered to your Chilean money pages. Tag each referring URL by language, TLD, and whether the linking page could realistically reach a Chilean buyer. Most teams discover that 60% to 80% of their "strong" links sit on English pages with no Chile geo relevance. That number alone justifies a rebalance conversation with leadership before the next quarter's budget locks.
Set a six-month target ratio rather than a hard cutover. A practical goal for a .cl commercial site is 70% or more of new links from Chilean Spanish pages, while keeping the best English citations that already exist. Track Chile country impressions in Search Console weekly, not global rank trackers. Pair link work with on-page fixes on the same URLs so Google has a coherent local story when new citations arrive.
Treat English links as supporting cast for global brand queries, not as the main strategy for Chilean commercial rankings. Your .cl money pages need Chilean editorial proof within the same language and market.
If you are unsure how skewed your profile is, export referring pages and filter by language. When English URLs dominate and Chilean URLs are under 20% on a .cl commercial site, you have your answer before you spend another dollar abroad. About our team: we have focused on Chile for more than a decade because this gap shows up in almost every inbound audit.
